How to chat with a PDF on Mac without uploading it

Most PDF chat tools begin with an upload box. That is convenient, but it also means copying your document to a website before you can ask a question.

On a Mac, you can keep the document workflow local instead. PDF Pals stores your PDFs and their searchable index on your computer. When you ask a question, the app retrieves relevant passages and sends the necessary context to the AI provider you selected. You can also connect a compatible local model for an offline workflow.

1. Open the PDF in a native Mac app

Download PDF Pals, install it, and add the PDF you want to read. The app processes the file on your Mac and makes its text searchable.

If the file contains selectable text, processing should be straightforward. If it is a scan, a photo, or a form with text embedded in images, enable OCR. Optical character recognition turns those page images into text the app can search.

Before asking questions, glance through the document and confirm that the expected pages are present. AI cannot recover a missing appendix or a page that was excluded from the file.

2. Ask a narrow first question

Specific questions produce answers that are easier to verify. Instead of asking for everything important in a 100-page report, start with one claim:

  • What revenue did the company report for 2025?
  • Which limitations did the authors identify?
  • What does section 4 say about termination?

You can widen the question after you understand the document structure. A focused first question also makes it obvious when the app retrieved the wrong passage.

3. Check the referenced pages

PDF Pals includes page references with its answers. Open the cited page and compare the answer with the original paragraph, table, or footnote.

This matters most for numbers, quotations, deadlines, and exceptions. A fluent answer can still omit a qualifier or confuse two similar figures. Treat the answer as a shortcut to the evidence, not a replacement for it. Our guide to verifying AI answers from PDFs covers this process in more detail.

4. Continue with the surrounding context

Once you find the right passage, ask follow-up questions that stay close to it:

  • What assumptions support this conclusion?
  • Does the document define this term elsewhere?
  • Which page contains the full table?
  • Summarize the two paragraphs before this quote.

This is usually more useful than requesting a generic summary. You control the direction of the reading and can stop to inspect the source whenever something looks important.

What stays on your Mac?

PDF Pals keeps your document library, extracted text, and searchable index locally. The AI provider you configure may receive retrieved text when generating an answer, subject to that provider's own data policy. If the document cannot leave your Mac at all, use a supported local inference server and verify that your chosen setup is fully offline.
