Your first chat with a document
You need an answer model: a local model or a provider with your API key. Check Settings ▸ Models ▸ Answer model.
1. Open a document
- Choose File ▸ Open… (⌘O), or
- Choose File ▸ New Chat… (⌘N), pick documents or click Choose Files…, then Start Chat, or
- Drag files onto the chat list or the PDF Pals icon in the Dock.
Dragging files onto Documents adds them without starting a chat. See supported files.
2. Ask a question
A new document is indexed first; you can type while it works. Click a suggested question, or type in Ask a question and press Return.
3. Check the source
Click a numbered citation to open the page with the passage highlighted. Chat ▸ Next Citation (⌥⌘↓) and Previous Citation (⌥⌘↑) step through them. See chats and citations.
Ask about more than one document
- In Documents, select several, right-click and choose Start New Chat with N Documents.
- In a chat, choose Chat ▸ Add Documents….
A chat searches only its own documents.
